Arusha
Arusha lies at the foot of beautiful Mount Meru and is known as the safari capital of the Northern Safari Circuit of Tanzania. It’s a bustling city with an interesting mix of markets, chaotic traffic, old colonial buildings, and modern amenities such as cafes with Wi-Fi and a selection of good restaurants.
Arusha is often viewed as a stopover on the way to a safari. However, if you stay a little longer, there is plenty to see and do in this bustling city, with its mix of colonial and modern architecture criss-crossed by chaotic streets filled with friendly Tanzanians.
Things to see and do in Arusha:
– Central and Maasai Markets – chaotic and vibrant markets selling everything from meat and fish to fabrics and electronics. The Maasai markets offer a wide range of curious and African works of art. They are crowded and busy, but they are a great way to experience the real Africa.
– The Heritage Center includes a museum, restaurant, spice center, shops and a garden with incredible sculptures. The Makonde Museum, with its masterfully carved masks, is a must see.
– The Boma Museum, originally a fort built by the Germans in early 1900, tells the colonial history of the city and the tribal history of the region. It is also home to the Natural History Museum with fascinating information about the archaeological and paleoanthropological sites in the area and wildlife.
– Shanga, on Dodoma Road, is a fabulous center with a workshop for disabled artists who make beautiful glasswork, beadwork, jewelry and clothing, boutiques and an open air restaurant.
