Day 2:
Kigali – Volcano National Park (2.5 hours)
On this day you will take a city tour of Kigali and visit the Genocide Memorial, which commemorates a senseless massacre of innocent people in 1994. Learn about the history of Rwanda from pre-colonial times to the 1994 genocide.
Then it goes on to Ruhengeri, the starting point for gorilla trekking in the Parc National des Volcans. The city itself, just 25 km from the Uganda border, is a relatively small town and offers great views of the surrounding volcanoes. The people here are very friendly and although it is a former Belgian colony (and therefore French-speaking), many people here speak English.
Depending on your arrival time, you will have enough time to explore the twin lakes Bulera and Ruhondo.
Overnight: Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel (full board).
Day 3:
Volcano National Park – Gorilla Trekking
Early breakfast at your lodge;
6:30 a.m .: Transfer to the HQs of the Volcano National Park.
7:00 a.m .: Registration where the park staff will determine which gorilla group you will visit. The park staff will discuss your fitness level and inform you about the trekking times and conditions for the various groups, depending on their location in the park the evening before. A total of 80 gorilla permits are available daily, with a maximum of eight trekkers visiting a group. As soon as the trekkers are divided into groups, the lead guide of each group informs the trekkers about the trekking procedures as well as the “do’s and don’ts” in the presence of gorillas.
After the briefing, the trekkers return to their respective vehicles to drive up the mountain to the starting point. Porters can be hired for the hike to carry backpacks and gear. The cost is US $ 10 per person per day. We recommend that you use this service.
Please remember to bring your passport, suitable waterproof walking shoes and a light raincoat. To protect against nettles, we recommend long pants and long-sleeved tops. A pair of old gardening gloves can help access the vegetation, while most hotels / huts provide a walking stick, which is particularly handy when hiking downhill. A small waterproof backpack is an excellent idea to carry a light snack, water bottles, and protection for your camera. Enjoy the encounters with the majestic mountain gorillas!
After the trek, you can make your way back to your lodge with your driver.
Overnight: Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel (full board).
