TANZANIA & ZANZIBAR – THE WILD EAST OF AFRICA
It’s not often that you book a vacation and get three. This is possible in Tanzania: One for the huge migrating herds of animals in the Serengeti World Heritage Site.
A second for Ngorongoro, the “prison crater” with the highest concentration of predators in Africa. And a third vacation for all the dreams under the whispering palm trees on the preheated beaches of Zanzibar. A perfect combination of safari & beach!
The mainland is about 1000m high on average. Many mountains reach heights of more than 2000m; like Kilimanjaro, they bear witness to a rainy volcanic past. Kilimanjaro has grown together from three volcanoes. Its highest peak, the Kibo (5892m), is not surpassed by any other mountain in Africa.

Travel information about Tanzania & Zanzibar
ENTRY, SECURITY, NUTRITION & CO.
Visa Tanzania:
A passport (valid for at least 6 months after departure) and a tourist visa are required for entry. The visa can be applied for online before departure. Please use this link: www.immigration.go.tz
As a rule, 2-3 weeks of processing have to be taken into account. Alternatively, the visa is also available at the airport when entering Tanzania (50 USD, to be paid in cash on site). A waiting time of approx. 1 hour is to be expected here.
You should always have your passport with you. However, to avoid the inconvenience of losing your passport, you should always have a copy with you that is kept separate from the original.
The Tanzanian Shilling (Shilingi) is the currency of Tanzania. It replaced the East African shilling, which was valid before independence in 1964 and until 1966.
One shilling is divided into 100 senti (cents). An amount is shown in the form of Schilling / Senti. If an amount corresponds to zero, a hyphen or an equal sign is used here. (Example: “= / 50” corresponds to 50 senti, “100 / =” corresponds to 100 schillings). However, due to inflation, senti coins disappeared from payment transactions from the 1990s onwards.
The US dollar is now used as a parallel currency in large areas of the country, especially in the touristically developed areas.
The opening times of the banks are normally Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in larger cities also until 4:00 p.m. – on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The US dollar has developed as a kind of parallel currency in this country. Especially in tourist areas and for payments to state institutions such as customs, immigration or national parks, only US dollars are actually accepted. Paying in US dollars is therefore not a problem at all, it can happen that you do not have to pay in the official local currency once during your stay in Tanzania. Small dollar denominations are recommended. It should be noted that dollar bills dated before the year 2000 cannot be accepted. A precise reason is not provided, they are just not accepted. It is also possible to take euros with you, but these are usually not accepted as a direct means of payment. In this case, it is necessary to exchange it with a bank or exchange office in the local currency.
Tanzania is an African country located in the east of the continent directly on the Indian Ocean. It is bordered in the south by the states of Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia, in the north by Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda and in the west by the DR Congo.
If you want to visit natural parks and reserves in Tanzania, you can do so by land or air. The roads in most wilderness areas are in poor condition and unmarked, and driving yourself is not recommended. Therefore, we provide you with an experienced driver who also acts as a trained guide. Alternatively, you can reach your destination by small aircraft, with safari vehicles and drivers provided by the accommodations. Cities are connected by a steady stream of buses and dala-dalas (minibuses).
The local airline Precision Air flies regularly, mostly via Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar, to all capitals and other important destinations in East Africa.
In Tanzania there is left-hand traffic.
Normal vaccination protection for tetanus, diphtheria and polio should be in place. Hepatitis A and B protection as well as malaria prophylaxis are recommended. Please consult your family doctor or a tropical institute. We recommend taking out health insurance abroad. Take essential medicines with you from home. Yellow fever is required when entering from an infected area (e.g. Kenya). Take your vaccination certificate with you so that you can prove that you are vaccinated! No vaccination is required for direct flights from Europe. If you are arriving from a country with yellow fever, you must provide evidence of a yellow fever vaccination. Current information can be found on the website of your Federal Foreign Office.
Tanzania is a safe country to travel to. With due respect for the population, a safe vacation is always guaranteed. Current information on security can be found on the website of the Federal Foreign Office.
Most camps, lodges or hotels offer local specialties as well as western dishes, which are usually excellent. In the national parks, the accommodations are often isolated, and driving in the dark is restricted, so meals are taken in the lodges and camps. Tap water in Tanzania is usually not safe to consume, but the camps, lodges and hotels offer bottled drinking water.
There is no best travel time for the whole country. It depends on which part of the country you want to visit with which travel focus (safari with animal observation, ascent of Kilimanjaro or beach holiday plus detour to observe animals).
Northeast with Serengeti – Ngorongoro – Arusha region
We recommend the months of June / July to October / November as well as the months of January to March, which are a very good time to travel to the northern national parks, both in terms of temperatures and the abundance of animals. Especially the migration in the northern Serengeti in July / September and January to March on the southern Serengeti plains is considered to be the absolute high season. This is also the best time to see the larger herds of animals.
Coast
In the coastal region there is a typical tropical climate with temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees and a relatively high humidity. The drier period from June to September is recommended. During this time the humidity is low with mostly blue skies. The hottest time of the year is between October and February, the rainy season between March and May.
Trekking tours in the Kilimanjaro area
To climb Kilimanjaro can be undertaken all year round. In the period from June to the beginning of October it is cool and dry. From around mid-December to March it is relatively warm, although the temperatures naturally vary greatly depending on the altitude. It is particularly cold when climbing the summit and at the summit.
Zanzibar
The island of Zanzibar is a year-round travel destination.
It never gets really cold in Tanzania: light clothing, preferably cotton or linen, is recommended. During the safari, avoid brightly colored clothing; beige, khakis and earth-brown clothing are better. Safari trips can be long, so it is advisable to wear light, comfortable clothing such as short-sleeved shirts and cotton / linen pants or shorts. Robust shoes and socks are required.
The evenings in the national parks can get quite fresh, so long sleeves and trousers should be worn. Also think of head protection and sun protection.
When visiting Zanzibar or any coastal city, remember to bring your beachwear – it’s always warm. On the beaches and within the confines of the hotels, normal swimwear is acceptable, but nudism is not.
The power supply in Tanzania is 220/240 volts at 50 Hz. Plugs are 3-point square (UK type). Adapters are available at all major airports.
